Body Wraps: Do They Work?

First, what is body wrap? 

Body wrap is a therapeutic body care treatment where an actual wrap such as foil, bandage or mud is wrapped around the body.

Body wraps can be used for different reasons with the aim of achieving different results. 

When used properly, body wrap treatment serves unique purposes such as eliminating toxins from the body, reducing appearance of stretch marks, tighten loss skin, hydrating both skin and body slimming. 

 Methods of body wrapping treatments: 

  • Bandage wrap
  • Plastic wrap
  • Linen wrap
  • Foil wrap
  • Rubber wrap

Choosing the right combination of active products and wrap system provides an effective relaxing results.

There are different types of products to be used for body wrap treatments which are:

Natural products

Apart from being natural, these are more holistic.

Marine products

These have trace elements of seaweed and salts. These salts are extracted from the marine algae plants and used for their therapeutic  value. It is the intensity of the light that determines the  colour of the seaweed. The three commonly used seaweeds are:

  • Fucus – It comprises iodine, vitamins, amino acids, potassium, magnesium and phytin.

Combination of all these improve circulation, promotes metabolism regulation. Boosts energy, stimulates  the thyroid gland, reduces fluid retention  and maintains a healthy body system.

  •  Ascophyllum – This is often associated with fucus, its filled with amino acids and minerals, it induces a sense of relaxation.
  • Laminaria  -  This  brown seaweed contains a high percentage of organic iodine, vitamins, amino acid and trace elements. It stimulates the lymphatic system, regulates thyroid gland and stimulates metabolism.

The detoxifying wrap consists of full skin brushing which helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, then full body exfoliation to cleanse and refine the skins surface. The detox product is applied to the skin and the wrapped up to allow the algae to penetrate the skin. Essential oils can be incorporated into products for specific effects some of which are to tone tissue, revitalise , relax, improve toxin elimination and circulation stimulation.


Marine, volcano mud, healing clay and earth, are rich in minerals and may be used as hydrating demineralising, detoxifying and refining skin texture and body shaping.

Mud may also be used as an antidote for stress, fatigue and feeling run down. Before applying mud, it is advisable to exfoliate the skin to help it to absorb minerals and to increase circulations.

Body wrapping can be very beneficial for anyone who wants to experience the extra value of minerals and special plants along with clay.  

Contraindications to body wrapping are present and should not be taken lightly such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • New scar tissue
  • Recent operation
  • High blood pressure
  • Epilepsy
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Allergic
  • Suffers from heat
  • Breast feeding
